I was shocked when I saw photos of Naomi Campbell and what looked at first like some tribal hair-do, but was, in fact, an honest case of traction alopecia; a result from years of being a supermodel and having her Afro locks tightly braided and straightened to infinity (literally).

This might have been shocking to see, but the reality is that many are suffering by the name of fashion and beauty, and it isn’t just hair loss either; fashion and beauty favorites skinny jeans, hair weaves, oversized bags and high heels will all have a detrimental effect on our health. Take heels, for example; how often have you seen supermodels topple and fall on the runway whilst trying to strut in stilettos? It may make you chuckle at first, but these are incidents where sprains and strains can occur – perhaps even causing damage long-term.
The skinny jeans’ story was a shocker to me too; how a woman in SF suffered a nerve condition due to the tightness of her skinnys. Furthermore, skinny jeans could be the cause of some cases of yeast infection and problems to urinate – so think twice about living in them 24/7, have your sloppy pants on when nobody is looking!
Watch out for those ‘IT’ bags too, the over-sized variety that can cause no end of back and upper body pain. This could be avoided if you can’t separate from your favorite tote; just try not to overfill it despite its size and look for those that have shorter straps (no chains) and a good form – the slouchy ones tend to let items move around a lot, which sends everything off balance and creates a bad posture.
Are you willing to suffer for the sake of fashion and have you any chilling stories to share with us?
