Jeggings. They were one of the most popular clothing items of 2010. They were introduced as jogging pants the year before and when they crossed over into mainstream wear, they took off like fire. Technically, they seem like a good idea. Leggings have always been comfortable to wear and look great under a long top or skirt. So why not make leggings to look like jeans?

That’s where the idea goes bad. When it became impossible to make jeans any skinnier, they transformed into the skin tight spandex jeggings instead. These are so body hugging that the pockets and flies is usually fake and merely part of the design of the fabric. With the advent of the jeggings, the idea of wearing leggings demurely under a long top went by the wayside as well. Jeggings are considered outerwear, so everyone can see you in your skin tight glory.
The problem? How about the obesity epidemic in America. Actually, you don’t even have to be obese to look like a wiggling plate of jells in jeggings. Women naturally tend to develop unkind things like fat around the hips and cellulite, even if they are not overweight. But throw in a few extra pounds, or a lot of pounds, and it is a fashion horror in the making.
Don’t get me wrong. I think it is great the way girls and women don’t try to hide their bodies anymore. If you are overweight and you don’t want to go on a diet, there is no reason you shouldn’t wear the latest fashions. Except for maybe jeggings. I can’t think of a typical female body type that would be flattered by skin tight jeggings but that must be just me because they have been hot sellers ever since they were introduced and are pushed by some of the biggest names in fashion and jeans. I just don’t think I will be wearing them any time soon!
