Fact: We Are Pretty Bad At Self Judgment

At least where looks are concerned – at least in my experience. I don’t take compliments very well; I always try to see past the compliment – do they want something from me? Do they feel sorry for me? Are they trying to tick that box of doing a ‘good deed of the day’?

Compliments – why do we always have to rip them to shreds? When someone tells you that you look great in that dress, when you consciously feel that your legs look like a pair of sparrows or your spare tire is prominent at the entire world to see – just how can you trust what they say?

self judgementAt the same time, though you can’t ignore the compliments; on the spot, we may shrug them off, but really we are still pondering over them hours or even days after. After reading studies on ‘self-judgment’ and after a day where I felt like dog’s dinner but still received two compliments about my ‘beautiful glow’, well it struck me that perhaps we are pretty bad at self-judgment. Studies suggest that this is particularly true when it comes to grading our own looks, intelligence and creativity.

So if you can’t trust your own judgment then who do you trust? I guess this also stimulates the question as to whether you care about how others see you. For me, I trust those who are close to me – my hubby who tells me I’m beautiful when stumbling out of the bed at 6:00am, my Mom that compliments me on my ability to accessorize and my best friend who always picks me up on those dog days. I’m also going to try and trust the strangers – I mean, why would they go out of their way to pay a compliment to someone they never met before?
