Going Natural – Can You Cope Without Makeup, Even for a Day?

Somehow, it’s quite an irony that ‘natural look’ is among today’s trends to permeate the world of cosmetics. Come to think of it, ‘natural’ signifies ‘bare’ – without makeup. Thus, it is only logical for one to ask what need it is spending money in order to appear how we were originally created. Some people would put the question straight, ‘what is the essence of makeup then?’

going naturalIsn’t it amusing how we drift so quickly to trends? With those lip-gloss on our lips and curl of an eyelash, it’s so easy to forget our exact look before making up. As you cake on the shadow, liner and gloss, it’s easy not to remember what ‘natural beauty’ actually appears like.

Taking this into consideration, it’s quite an irony and also amazing that the most recent trend to enter the world of beauty advices us to use makeup that produces a more natural look. It’s even more amazing how an increasing number of celebrities is trading their conventional beauty regimen for the camera in-between – in such a way that really appears public. Perhaps you’ve not bothered to check the newsstands recently; if so, you probably had not taken note of the recent trend in cover girls – stunning celebrities who do not mind showing all just to reveal the real looks outside of makeup.

Normally, celebrities would not want to pose for this sort of non glamorous shots; however, a lot of them are now opting to look natural – without makeup. It hasn’t yet escaped my memory how it was the vogue for cover girls to apply makeup lavishly. However, it seems to be an old-fashion thing now – what you see these days over the newsstands is makeup-free faces – the cover girls are now wearing natural looks.

Now, here’s the question; what’s the significance of this new trend, at least for beauty achievement in the future? Another critical question is this; what has the natural makeup got to do with the latest trend of ‘bare face’ (without makeup) that is now popular among celebs?

If you are the fashion addicts, it’s possible you must have heard this phrase in different ways; good economy causes the hems of skirts to go up, while the sour economy makes the skirt hem to come down. In essence, it appears as though the economic state has a way of dictating the turn of events in the fashion world. Is it really so?

Beauty vs Brains

If you are like me, you probably watch beauty pageants, then shake your head and wonder what on earth the judges are thinking. Okay, beauty does play a very big role when it comes to the pageants after all, but isn’t there more to be “the best” and “most desirable” than just looks alone?

Beautiful girls have long held the stereotype of being dumb. It seems like society has programmed us to believe females are either beautiful or brainy, but not both. In some ways, these beauty pageants reinforce these beliefs.

beauty and brainsTake Miss America, for example. Contestants are certainly graded on beauty, but other factors are also supposed to matter such as the talent portion and interview questions. The answers to some of the questions are down right embarrassing. How often do you see a beautiful contestant who is also self assured and able to confidently and intelligently deliver a rational reply to an interview question?

Granted, the women are young and nervous. However, these are supposed to be the crème de la crème that have risen through the ranks of lesser pageants. Should more focus be on brains rather than beauty? Of course it isn’t now. All you have to do is take a look at the pageant circuit for babies and toddlers to see that. Starting at a very young age, girls are awarded prizes for being the “most beautiful.”

Is there anything wrong with awarding beauty in our culture? Only the fact that it gives our young girls an unattainable goal to strive for, and one that, even if achieved, is not all that rewarding. Can being beautiful put food on the table or pay the rent? Girls today need to know they are beautiful, even if they do have a few extra pounds, and, even if they haven’t undergone plastic surgery by the age of 20.

Some things are more important than being beautiful, like being brainy. And as long as it is all kept in perspective, then I guess if you have outstanding looks, you might as well earn a reward for it!

A Dilemma with my Curly Hair

Not quite long, a close friend scolded me for showing so much fuss about my hair, which is quite curly (I’m sure you already guessed that). This hair of mine grows in volume during summer, and when it is rainy or humid, it gets frizzy; thus, no matter the kind of gel I apply, the hair just stares at me in such a shabby manner.
Frizzy hair
This close pal of mine has straight and lustrous hair that would not react negatively under a blow-dryer. So, it’s not easy for her to understand my hair frustration.

She irritates me terribly each time with her “it’s just hair” words. She will now add to my fury by saying that I needed a lot of therapy and improved self-esteem. Maybe, she should wear my shoes and see how it pinches – or perhaps put on a wig that has the texture of my hair just for seven days so that she can get a feel of my frustration.

It may seem like it is ‘merely hair’; I don’t deny my excessive complain about the hair, and I also understand that I have to be thankful that it is not something as grave as life-threatening ailments or even obesity. There’s no doubt that I have a great life – in essence, my hair condition is not something serious.

But I need to be frank. The hair makes me want to go crazy! Each time I feel the ends. It appears as though am touching straw. There’s no life left in it, especially now that summer is here. Most times, my hair typifies a combination of Ramen noodle and dried-out frizz – the result of excessive gel and less moisture.

Envy is aroused in me each time I watch my friend prepare for the day with ease, with no hair frustration to face. Once she applies a little amount of spritzes from the spray container and comb through lightly and touches up with blow dryer, she looks as stunning as a model and good to go.

By 8am, you will find me still looking like a wet dog. My hair would experience more dryness when I try using a blow dryer. Yet, it beats my imagination why it is not easy for me to just fluff it out. When am up in the morning? It still appears shabby, even after I style it. I wish my friend had a glimpse of my daily frustrations trying to manage my hair.

No matter the amount of conditions I apply in the morning in the course of my shower, my curls appear as though moisture is drained off it before evening. I practically go to work everyday with wet hair since it appears to work when I dry the hair naturally. It sounds so easy, but it is quite an arduous task trying to achieve manageable hair that I can go to work with.

But come to think of it, what if I have an interview or a highly official meeting? It will be a crazy thing appearing in such official settings with wet hair!
